Sally Lesser has been active in New York theatre and television for over 30 years. Until November 2011 she worked as the Associate Costume Designer at the ABC soap One Life to Live for 4,904 episodes where she received 3 Daytime EmmyAwards and 9 nominations
Her extensive background in theatre includes the costume design for 150 plays. She designed the original Little Shop of Horrors for which she received the Joseph Maraham Theatre Design Award. Subsequent productions included the Off Broadway run at the Orpheum Theatre, the LA production, the National Tour, the Australian, German, and Canadian Companies.
She also re-designed the British cult musical Return to the Forbidden Planet when it opened Off Broadway. She was later invited to bring her designs to the long running West End production and later to a UK tour.
She designed 25 major productions at La Mama ranging from rock n roll theatre to Greek epics to jazz operas. Other NY theatres include Theater for the New City, American Place Theatre, The Women’s Project, and New Federal Theatre. She had costume design residencies at the Impossible Ragtime Theatre and Karen Malpede’s New Cycle Theatre.
She has also designed extensively for regional theaters. Some of these include the Alley Theatre, Pittsburgh Public, Syracuse Stage and San Diego Rep. At Berkeley Rep she won a Drama-Logue for her costume design of The Hairy Ape.
Sally owned and managed two costume shops, Schnoz and Schnoz and ACCU Costumes. they constructed costumes for varied projects including theatre, film, opera, commercials, fashion and special events. Clients included Shakespeare and Co, Houston Grand Opera, Menudo for Crest, Chaka Chan and Chippendales.
After being an avid flamenco student for 10 years, Sally started a small business called Sally Lesser Designs. It is a marriage of passions-flamenco dance, design, and dressmaking .Her clients include students and professionals from around the world.
